I paddle because: It gives me the opportunity to push myself to my limits both mentally and physically. Paddling has taught me how to set goals and be committed, and has made me into a happier and healthier person.
What I enjoy about canoe kayak: My favourite thing about paddling is all the amazing people I've met through this sport.
2017 CSG goals: Have fun and try my best!
Looking forward to at CSG: Meeting new people and making memories!
Motivating quote: "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard"

Jia Kim

Jia-Kim-Sq Age: 15
Club:
Ridge Canoe & Kayak Club
Hometown:
 Maple Ridge
Number of years paddling: 7
I paddle because: It allows me to be active in a healthy environment where I am surrounded by others I can frequently relate to and form close friendships with. The friendship and bonds I have created with both my teammates and competitors over the past many years are invaluable. In addition, I learn each day of what is necessary for the maintenance of my general well-being and how to be carefully aware of the nature around us. Kayaking is a method in which I can stay perfectly fit and able doing activities that I enjoy.
What I enjoy about canoe kayak: I particularly enjoy the regattas and racing involved with the sport as it provides an opportunity to analyze my progress and communicate with people I do not regularly encounter.
2017 CSG goals: I would be content knowing that I attempted my absolute best at the games. My goal is to beat my current personal best times in the various distances and finish sixth or above in any race.
Looking forward to at CSG: I am excited to travel to Winnipeg and visit the city. I believe the Canada Summer Games would be a wonderful learning experience and could help me to compete better in the future.
Motivating quote: "Just do it." - Nike

Number of years paddling: 7 years
I paddle because: There aren't many sports where you're training and racing in nature, paddling on the most gorgeous waterways and surrounded by trees and animals. It's pretty unique and pretty special.
What I enjoy about canoe kayak: The places I get to go and people I get to meet.
2017 CSG goals: I hope we have a great team performance at the games and I want to contribute to that success in any way that I can.
Previous Games experience and how it will help: 2013 Candada Summer Games and 2015 Western Canada Summer Games | There's a different atmosphere and more distractions at multisport games which can cause nerves and anxiousness. Having been to the 2013 Canada Games and the 2015 Westerns, I have a greater sense of calmness going into them than before.
Looking forward to at CSG: Seeing our province and my teammates do well.
Favourite snack: Nice-cream
Other interests and hobbies: Coaching, swimming, yoga, cooking
Motivating quote: "No glory in the process"
Would choose this superpower: I would want to be able to make food appear whenever anyone needed it. I think it would be a good superpower because it could help a lot of people, and food also has the power of bringing people together.

Women's Canoe

Samantha Loutet

Sam-Loutet Age: 16
Club:
Burnaby Canoe & Kayak Club
Hometown
: Burnaby
Number of years paddling: 5 years
I paddle because: I paddle for many reasons. Besides the obvious facts that I love the sport and all the opportunities I experience because of it, I think paddling makes me a better person. I have learned more about myself on the water than I have anywhere else. The effort I put into training makes me more aware of my capabilities and how much I can push my mental and physical limits. Paddling is also an amazing escape; I know that everything bad happening in my life gets left behind as soon as I get in my boat. Every time I hear my paddle hit the water, I instantly become calmer and more focused. I think this has helped me get through some of the worst times of my life, and I am very grateful to be a part of this sport.
What I enjoy about canoe kayak: Of all the different aspects of canoe/kayak, I enjoy racing the most. It's the best feeling in the world when you finish a race and know you left everything on the course - it makes every hard fought kilometre of training worth while.
2017 CSG goals: My goals for the 2017 Canada Summer Games include making finals and placing top five in two single races. Also, to enjoy every moment of the amazing experience.
Previous Games experience and how it will help: 2015 Western Canada Summer Games | I learned not to be afraid of older and more seasoned athletes. Being one of the younger athletes going to the games, I hope this experience will benefit me in 2017.
Looking forward to at CSG: I am looking forward to racing and all the chocolate milk I will drink every day.
Favourite snack: Goldfish crackers
Motivating quote: "Your mind will quit 1000 times before your body does."

Anna Zhang

Anna-Zhang Age: 17
Club:
False Creek Sprint Canoe Club
Hometown:
 Vancouver
Number of years paddling: 3 years
I paddle because: To see how fast I can make a boat go and to give myself something to really focus on. I like having this one sport that I can really dedicate myself to, knowing that as long as I work hard it will give me many opportunities, like competing at Canada games.
What I enjoy about canoe kayak: I love being outside and being on the water is a great way to do that. Canoeing is also very technical and challenging and who doesn't love a challenge.
2017 CSG goals: To go hard and have fun. Hopefully pull some personal bests too!
Previous Games experience and how it will help: 2015 Western Canada Summer Games | I learned that our men's canoe coach Aaron Rublee was a real teddy bear, super chill to hug. This will help me for the next games because his brother Cory is going to be the canoe coach and you can never get enough hugs. I also learned you shouldn't eat a stupid amount of bananas and muffins just because they seem to be unlimited.
Looking forward to at CSG: The single and doubles distances races
Favourite snack: bread and bananas!
Other interests and hobbies: Hiking, biking, bouldering and anything else that gets me outside and on an adventure!
Motivating quote: "You might get run over; you might get hit by lightning. I mean, who knows? Each day, there is a chance you might die. And there's nothing wrong with that. Every living being on Earth is facing that same existential rift." Alex Honnold
Would choose this superpower: Photosynthesis rather than having to eat and sleep for energy.

Favourite snack: Avocado Toast
Other interests and hobbies: Hot Yoga
Would choose this superpower: To fly like an eagle

Heather Potkins

Heather-Potkins Age: 16
Club:

Hometown:
 Nelson
Number of years paddling: 3
I paddle because: I love being outside. I paddle for those mornings where the lake is perfectly calm and the water is warmer than the air.
What I enjoy about canoe kayak: I enjoy the individual challenge as well being part of a team. Canoe kayak has provided me with so many experiences, and I have met so many amazing people through the sport.
2017 CSG goals: To gain experience and competence competing at a higher level, to reach personal bests and participate in team boats.
Looking forward to at CSG: Competing against other provinces and experiencing the multi sport aspect of the event.
Favourite snack: Pomegranates!

Melody Oh

Melody-Oh Age: 16
Club:
Ridge Canoe & Kayak Club
Hometown:
 Maple Ridge
Number of years paddling: Almost 6 years (2 summers canoeing)
I paddle because: It's a mental and physical (coffee) break from the other half of my life. Sometimes I have trouble balancing out my academics with sports, but I wouldn't dedicate all this time if I didn't enjoy it. Making me fit is a bonus too.
What I enjoy about canoe kayak: I love the paddling community and the thrill of racing. Being surrounded by teamates with a strong competitive drive and a supportive coach makes each practice enjoyable. Even on a bad day, I have something to fight for. Then, releasing all that energy into my races and finishing well gives me the greatest satisfaction.
2017 CSG goals: To produce a result that I can feel happy about. I want to race knowing I tried my hardest and show the product of my long brutal training.
Previous Games experience and how it will help: 2015 Western Canada Summer Games | To relax when things don't turn out as anticipated. Just focus on the next stroke and re-evaluate the next race plan. Also, eat desserts on the last day because they were gooood.
Looking forward to at CSG: I look forward to racing with more women canoers around Canada and to being part of this big sporting event. It's like a mini Olympics!
Favourite snack: Apple slices dipped in peanut butter (or switch apples for oreos)
Other interests and hobbies: 3D modeling and coding has become one of my favorite hobbies in the past year. I'm actually making a VR kayak game at the moment. Baking sourdough bread is also another interest that I've been obsessed with.
Motivating quote: " Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. "
Would choose this superpower: Having the power of Flash would be nice but it's basically a god tier level. As a huge comic book nerd, I've always been envious of characters that could self-heal, so maybe a power that can heal anyone. I would never be sore. The only drawback is, lots of food are required for energy. I could solve the world's problems while eating.
