Paddle Report: Great weekend out on the Holmes River
June 20, 2018
The Northwest Paddle Brigade Club hosted their annual Paddlefest from June 15-17 on the Holmes River. Thirteen participants took part in the event outside of McBride, BC.
Here is the paddle report from the Northwest Brigade Paddlefest from the club’s president.
“Great Weekend out on the Holmes river. Two individuals arrived Thursday night to start holding down some camp sites at the recreation site, while others trickled in during the day on Friday and into the evening.
A safety talk was given to each arriving individual about the active logging traffic happening on the Beaver Forestry Road on Friday. The Radio channel was shared and communication with the logging crew was made by Kim (president) on Friday afternoon. No logging traffic was to be present over the Saturday and Sunday.
First run on the Holmes was Friday afternoon. Saturday morning started off to a lazy start, a safety/pep talk was given by Kim at 10 a.m. to all paddling members and shuttle drivers. We covered first aid kit locations, river signals, and answered any questions concerning the river or its access.
Two runs were done on the Holmes on Saturday. The club sponsored Smokey lunch went over great, with paddlers arriving back after the first run to a lit BBQ and fire for roasting.
Before Saturday’s second run, another safety concern “arrived”. A small jet/river boat was put in above the falls at the recreation site. We approached the owner explaining our event and our concern for the paddlers and all went well.
Saturday evening was a much quieter fireside due to the fun had during the day.
A final run was completed Sunday morning after a lite breakfast served up by the club.
River level was low-med level. Lots of catch on the fly play waves/holes. There were some amazing surfs at “lunchbox” and the head of the canyon. Beaver Falls was enjoyed by all. The Dore River was not paddled this Festival Year, there are a few looking to paddle it next year!
Great weekend with tons of smiles and laughter. We hope to have more folks join us at our annual event.”
