Canoe Kayak BC Announces the 2021-2022 Performance and Development Award Winners and recipients of the 2021 CKBC Scholarship

 

Canoe Kayak BC is excited to announce the U16+ Athlete of the Year and BC Cup award winners for the 2020-2021 season, as well as the recipients of the 2021 CKBC Scholarship.


1. U16+ Athlete of the Year Awards

 

Winners of the U16+ awards were selected based on their performances at either the 2021 National Championships or at an international event.

“A massive congratulations to the athletes selected” said Blake Dalton, Canoe Kayak BC’s Provincial Coach. “While it has been a difficult year with Covid, I have been so impressed with the results of our athletes at the domestic and international level. From Brian Malfesi (Ridge) competing at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics to Veronica So (False Creek) claiming gold at the 2021 Olympic Hopes Regatta. We’re seeing success in almost all our disciplines and age categories.”

2. 2021 BC Cup Overall Sprint Champions

 

The 2021 BC Cup Overall Sprint Champions were selected based on total points from our 2021 shortened regatta season that included: BC Cup #2 (Burnaby), BC Cup #3 (Nanaimo) and Pacific Cup/U14 Provincial Championships (Ridge). 

 

Athletes accumulated points in each event according to their finish placement and then ranked according to the total number of points accrued. The complete point totals can be found here.

 

The purpose of the BC Cup Series is to provide athletes U14 and novice athletes with developmentally appropriate racing opportunities in a variety of boats (singles, doubles and fours) and distances (sprint and long distance).

3. 2021 Canoe Kayak BC Scholarship Award Winners

 

Cassidy MacPherson (Ridge) and Brin Nyvall (Chinook) are the recipients of the 2021 Canoe Kayak BC scholarships. These paddlers were awarded $500 in recognition of their dedication and commitment to the sport, combined with outstanding scholastic achievement and community involvement.

 

About the Canoe Kayak BC Scholarship:

Canoe Kayak BC awards two $500 scholarships annually to assist current members in their pursuit of post-secondary education and the development of the sport within the province. These Canoe Kayak BC scholarships honour young British Columbia students who have:

  • Shown outstanding leadership traits and skills in canoe or kayak and within their community.
  • Demonstrated a personal contribution to improve their community, school, club and in general, helping others with their daily lives.
  • Shown athletic dedication in the sport of canoe or kayak.
  • Accomplished scholastic success.
